                Peggy Albers and Jo Boaler

                __Dr. Jo Boaler
Professor of Education (Mathematics) Stanford University
All children can experience enjoyment and success when learning mathematics, but very few do. We know how to give students positive experiences but there is a huge gap between what we know works, from research, and what happens in most classrooms. There is an urgent need to increase public understanding of the actions that we can all take to give students positive mathematical experiences.

                Dr. Peggy Albers
Professor of English and Literacy Education, Georgia State University

Literacy today is more than reading and writing. Being literate in the 21st century takes the ability to critically access, interpret, and create meaning through multiple forms of expression. Alternate forms of communications –such as art, music, drama, film, multimedia, digital media, technologies and dance-play a crucial role in helping students cultivate these skills.
_The Symposium is for listening, dialoging and reflecting about learning and knowing in order to strengthen the foundation of our teaching practice. Mary Collins, the principal of Mary Collins School from 1976—1982, believed that the best teaching and learning comes from a knowledge of the learning process. She believed it is the joy and duty of teachers to be lifelong learners. This symposium is presented in that spirit.

                Mission of Cherry Valley School

The purpose of education is to help students develop the best that is in them.  Part of that is an appreciation of who they are as well as a respect for differences and diversity. I hope that students will leave the process of education more curious than when they entered it. This curiosity about life would give students a sense of competence and confidence that comes from years of learning creative problem-solving and thinking skills. This confidence would impel students to satisfy their curiosity to be willing to be responsible for others within the society to make it better for all.

                Mary Collins
Principal of Cherry Valley School (1974 - 1984)

                Where are the Cherries?

                Picture
Cherry Valley is an amazing school with many unique attributes.  We have an enriching gardening program with a farm stand, we are environmentally friendly and have implemented our Cool the Earth program, we support local farms for our lunch program and our parents are very involved in the well being of their children and the school they go to.

Our cherries are definitely a symbol of our school, but the sunflower struck me.  It reminds me of the bright smiling faces on our kids, of our garden, of the growth , the earth we all respect and we all are working to conserve and most importantly the bright future our kids have to look forward to.  With the butterfly in corner symbolizing their beautiful transformation as the children learn and grow. I feel this design symbolized all aspects of our wonderful school and how beautiful it is!
